Pico y placa on a rental car: Medellín and Bogotá
Updated:
A rental car is subject to pico y placa like any private car: the restriction depends on the last digit of its licence plate, not on who drives it. In Medellín it applies Monday to Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. depending on the day of the week; in Bogotá, Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. depending on whether the date is even or odd. On Rodii a booking is never blocked because of pico y placa, and the fine for driving during restricted hours is paid by the driver.
Summary
- Pico y placa applies to the rental car: what counts is the last digit of its plate.
- Medellín and its metropolitan area: Monday to Friday, 5:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., fixed digits per weekday (they change every semester).
- Bogotá: Monday to Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; on odd dates plates ending in 1 to 5 may drive, on even dates plates ending in 6 to 0.
- Each Medellín car's page on Rodii shows the days that car is restricted.
- A booking is never blocked because of pico y placa: planning around it is the driver's responsibility.
- Driving during restricted hours carries a fine of 15 daily minimum wages and the car can be impounded.
1. Does a rental car have pico y placa?
Yes. Pico y placa restricts driving based on the vehicle's licence plate, so it applies the same way to your own car, a borrowed car or a rental. What matters is the last digit of the plate of the car you drive and the city you drive in.
Rodii cars are private-use vehicles: being rented does not give them any special exemption.
2. Pico y placa in Medellín: second-semester 2026 rotation
Since Monday, August 3, 2026, this rotation for cars applies in Medellín and its metropolitan area, based on the last digit of the plate. It runs Monday to Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.:
- Monday: plates ending in 5 and 8.
- Tuesday: plates ending in 1 and 4.
- Wednesday: plates ending in 0 and 2.
- Thursday: plates ending in 3 and 6.
- Friday: plates ending in 7 and 9.
3. Pico y placa in Bogotá
In Bogotá the restriction for private cars runs Monday to Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and depends on whether the date of the month is even or odd, not on the day of the week.
On odd dates, plates ending in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 may drive. On even dates, plates ending in 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0 may drive. It does not apply on weekends.
If the car is registered outside Bogotá, check the current rules for vehicles from other cities with Bogotá's Secretaría Distrital de Movilidad before driving.
4. How to know if the car you rent has pico y placa
In Medellín, each car's page on Rodii has a pico y placa section with the weekdays that car is restricted. You see it before booking and can pick a car with no restriction on your travel days.
In Bogotá the restriction changes with the date, so the car page can't show it as fixed weekdays: it appears as “To be confirmed”. Ask the owner through the booking chat what digit the plate ends in and check it against the even/odd calendar.
In other cities, if the car page shows “To be confirmed”, it means we don't have that city's decree loaded yet: check the current restriction with the local transit authority.
5. Exempt cars: electric, hybrid and gas
In Medellín, zero-emission electric vehicles, gas-powered vehicles and hybrids registered in the RUNT (Colombia's national vehicle registry) are exempt. In Bogotá, electric and hybrid vehicles can get the exemption by registering with the Secretaría Distrital de Movilidad: it is not automatic.
On Rodii a car shows as “Exempt” only when our team validated that exemption while reviewing the vehicle. If the car page doesn't say so, assume the car has pico y placa.
6. Who pays the fine if a rental car is driven during pico y placa?
The driver. On Rodii, fines, traffic tickets and tolls incurred during the booking are paid by the driver, and a booking is never blocked because of pico y placa: the driver is responsible for not driving during restricted hours.
In Medellín, driving during restricted hours is penalised with a ticket of 15 daily legal minimum wages (about $875,000 COP in 2026) and can include impounding the vehicle, with the tow and impound-lot costs that come with it.
7. Tips to plan your rental
- Before booking, check the car's restricted days on its page and compare them with your travel dates.
- If you'll drive a lot on weekdays, pick a car with no restriction on those days, or an exempt one.
- Outside the restriction hours you can drive: in Medellín before 5:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m.; in Bogotá before 6:00 a.m. and after 9:00 p.m.
- If you pick up the car on a restricted day, agree with the owner on a handover time outside the restricted window.
